Poor nutritional status is common in heart failure (HF) patients. The effect of nutritional support on hospitalisation and mortality has not been demonstrated in HF. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of nutritional support on hospitalisation and mortality in HF. This is a randomized, double-blind, controlled, non-inferiority trial. In each centre, 10 patients with HF were randomly assigned to a standard dietary formula or a dietetic supplementation formula. In patients with COPD, creatinine clearance less than 50 ml/min or a weight loss greater than 10% over 6 months, the treatment was interrupted after 5 months. Treatment included enteral or parenteral nutrition in a unit-based study. The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients with a 30-day hospitalisation. All patients and centres were followed until March 2017 for mortality. Between September 2012 and January 2014, 219 patients with HF were included. A total of 86% were on diuretics, 69% received angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, 42% had an echocardiographic sign of systolic dysfunction and 19% had diabetes mellitus.
